Two sheets. Japan. Written and directed by Charlie Chaplin, this movie is anything but a comedy. It is the story of a woman who leaves for Paris on her own when her fiancee fails to show up at the train station. When he arrives in Paris to find her he discovers that she has taken up with a wealthy Parisian gentleman. She refuses to return to her first love and he commits suicide. The Stenberg brothers were orthodox constructivists, and while some of their most spectacular posters employ three-dimensional, stereoscopic effects, some of their purest designs, such as this one, use flat graphic forms. In this masterpiece of well-balanced layout, the Stenberg's depict the happy young woman on one side of the image and the despairing, desolate fiancee, wandering the streets in the other. The title is arranged across the top left side of the image, with the movie's details inventively organized in a grid on the bottom right. Pack p. 212-13.
